Pilates

The Pilates method was the brainchild of German-born, Joseph Pilates who was pioneering in his rehabilitation work to help people become more healthy.
Regular Pilates users find improvements in both physical and mental health, leading to an increased lung capacity with deep, healthy breathing and good circulation. In addition, alongside improved posture, coordination and balance, healthy bones and joints are more benefits of this powerful tool.

Fitter for life Pilates courses aim to increase mobility, strength and balance as well as improving posture and wellbeing through a flowing sequence of enjoyable and effective exercises. Regular practice increases endurance and the ability for the body to stand tall, enabling the internal organs of the body to have plenty of room. A slouched body may reduce the ability of the organs to function to their full capacity and by improving posture, the lungs are able to expand more fully, increasing energy and exercise tolerance.

Our coach will modify each of our courses to suit the group, paying attention to each person’s specific issues as they develop their activity levels and capabilities. This includes learning of clients’ progress and experiences during before- and after-session conversations, encouraging fun and enjoyment, in a friendly and interactive atmosphere.

Like all Fitter For Life activities, our Pilates courses are structured to encourage social contact with fellow group members, offering new friendships, mutual encouragement and support, shared experiences, enjoyment and chat. At the end of each session we offer a twenty minutes on-line “coffee corner” to all participants.

Beginners

We offer an 8-week, beginners course which focuses on posture. The course is for people with no previous experience of Pilates, and offers an active focus on better core control and body alignment in their physical activity and daily living. The course discusses the benefits of regular stretching as part of our daily routine, including its strong benefits for our functional capabilities. By the end of the course clients can expect to have a strong initial appreciation of Pilates and its benefits for their health. Their bodies will have become used to the new movement and activity. Their physical and everyday functional capability will have noticeably increased.

The eight Beginners sessions are over eight weeks. After signing-up, your personal consultation with a coach will last approximately 25-30 minutes. The consultation costs £12, and you will confirm together which of our courses best suits your personal aims and current health level. The beginners course costs £60 for the eight sessions and gives access to all our members’ materials and services including previous sessions’ recordings, our health and wellbeing archive and social groups. To sign up please click here

Mixed

The ‘Mixed’ sessions are for people of all levels of physical capability who have some experience of Pilates. The sessions have a changing weekly focus such as hip strengthening, mobilising, stronger shoulders, lower body focus and spine mobility. The sessions also incorporate stretching techniques that are excellent additions to daily physical activity and, together with Pilates, support strong improvements in flexibility and physical capability. The course duration is twelve weeks, on completion of which we offer a free consultation with a coach to discuss your on-going health and wellbeing aims. Over the twelve weeks your physical and functional capacity will increase very substantially, opening up further health and wellbeing improvement options that your coach will be delighted to explore with you.
